Horticulture is one of the important sectors of agriculture, which consists of fruits, flowers, vegetables, spices, tuber crops, mushrooms, bamboo, plantation crops, and medicinal and aromatic plants (Sonah et al., ). Biotechnological tools have revolutionized conventional plant breeding methods by providing new genotypes for breeding. Protected cropping, also referred to as greenhouse horticulture, is the production of horticultural crops within, under or sheltered by structures to provide modified growing conditions and/or protection from pests, diseases and adverse weather. In its broadest definition, protected cropping includes the use of greenhouses and glasshouses, shade houses, screen houses and crop top structures. Agriculture in Kenya dominates Kenya's economy. 15–17 percent of Kenya's total land area has sufficient fertility and rainfall to be farmed, and 7–8 percent can be classified as first-class land.
